PE

At Gretton Primary School we are committed to providing an inclusive, exciting and engaging Physical Education Curriculum to all children.

We aim to inspire our pupils to enjoy and engage in PE activities by providing a wide range of opportunities within PE lessons, after school clubs and extra curricular sport activities within the wider community.   All children access a block of swimming lessons in Years 3-5 and throughout the school our pupils take part in Forest School which provides physical challenges and activities in the great outdoors.

For the Academic year 2024-2025 we are implementing a new PE Curriculum from GetSet4PE.

Some of the PE opportunities we provide on a regular basis are:

* Whole School Sports Day

* Netball, Football, Rubgy tournaments and Athletics against other Primary Schools in the Tewkesbury district

* Stanway Rounders competing against two local schools

* Bell Boating Races against several local schools from Gloucestershire and Worcestershire

* Judo classes for Year 5 and year 6

* Yoga workshop for Year 2 and 3

Intent

The intention of the Get Set 4 PE scheme is first and foremost to help children feel like they can partake in any sport and to foster a love of sports and fitness. We focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that children need in order to become confident sports people, both in team and individual sports. Our curriculum introduces children to a wide range of sporting activities, techniques and opportunities both in and out of school.

Children will develop the physical skills of throwing, catching, running, jumping and balance. They will develop a knowledge of several team and individual sports and the unique skills that each of these require. Through our PE curriculum, the children will develop transferable skills such as team-working, leadership, creative thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and performance skills. These skills are vital to children’s development as learners and have a wider application in their general lives outside and beyond school.

Get Set 4 PE’s scheme of work enables pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets outlined in the national curriculum and the aims of the scheme align with those in the national curriculum.

Implementation

Through Get Set 4 PE’s scheme, pupils take part in a wide range of sports, covering Games, Gymnastics and Dance themes.   Each of these key areas follows the set rules from the particular sport and are in line with the National Curriculum’s expectations.  The Get Set 4 PE scheme is a spiral curriculum, with key areas revisited again and again with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to revisit and build on their previous learning.

Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from individual and group warm ups, group games and activities and whole class sports. Videos can sometimes be used at the beginning of a lesson to demonstrate specific sports skills for the theme.  This variety means that lessons are engaging and appeal to those with a variety of learning styles. Differentiated guidance is available for every lesson to ensure that lessons can be accessed by all pupils and opportunities to stretch pupils’ learning are available when required. Strong subject knowledge is vital for staff to be able to deliver a highly effective and robust PE curriculum. Each unit of lessons includes teacher information cards and sometimes videos to develop subject knowledge and support ongoing CPD. Get Set 4 PE has been created with the understanding that many teachers do not feel confident delivering the full PE curriculum and every effort has been made to ensure that they feel supported to deliver lessons of a high standard that ensure pupil progression.

All children will be given the opportunity to take part in out of school sports activities and competitions when in Key Stage 2.  These opportunities will enable children to work as a school team, meet other school children to play competitively against and put their sports skills into practise in a ‘real life’ setting. It will also enable children to visit sports facilities such as larger schools with running tracks, playing fields and facilities they can’t always access within their own school environment.

After the implementation of Get Set 4 PE, pupils should leave school equipped with a range of physical sports skills to enable them to succeed in their secondary education. They will be keen sports people who can get involved in a range of sporting games and activities with confidence and enjoyment.  They will have taken part in a wide range of sports both individual and team and will have an awareness of what sports they specifically enjoy taking part in or have a skill in.

Impact

The impact of Get Set 4 PE’s scheme can be constantly monitored through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. Each scheme of work includes guidance to support teachers in assessing pupils against the learning objectives.

The expected impact of following the Get Set 4PE scheme of work is that children will:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives
  •  Meet the relevant Early Learning Goals at the end of EYFS (Reception) and the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National curriculum for History at the end of Key Stage 1 and 2.

Swimming Information

94% of 2022 to 2023 Year 6 cohort can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over 25 meters, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
